The Water Tastes Like Wine
I think it's good to constantly be aware of the things that bring you closest to Christ and make note of them. Sometimes it's actions, sometimes it's moments, and sometimes it's places that put you in a prayerful mood. I've always found that when I write notes along with my Bible reading then my relationship with Christ is strengthened. So why not post those notes on here? Anyway, I'll be walking through the Gospel According to John for the next few weeks. Here we go. John 2:1-12 In John 1, the beloved disciple introduces us in a major way to the person of Jesus Christ. He clearly describes him as God in the flesh - the Creator of this world and the true Light come to reconcile lost humanity to himself. Immediately in John 2, we are met with the record of Jesus' first earthly miracle: turning water into wine at a wedding at Cana. I think it's really important to pay attention to each and every action of Jesus recorded in the Gospels; they're there for a reason. So why would John include a story about Jesus making water taste a little better? Why would that matter? Take a look at Isaiah 25:6-9. The Old Testament prophet wrote of the coming of the Lord as "a feast of rich food, a feast of well-aged wine." On this day God would "swallow up death forever" and "wipe away tears from all faces." And as all of that comes about, the people will say, "Behold, this is our God; we have waited for him, that he might save us." Without question Jesus has this picture of the celebration of the coming of the Lord and the rejoicing of the people in mind as he performs his miracle at Cana. Jesus isn't merely spiking the punch or doing a cool magic trick, he is showing that he is the embodiment of the arrival of the Kingdom of God. He is saying, "Rejoice! For the God whom you seek and the salvation you long for is here in front of you." I'd encourage you once again to pay attention to Jesus' actions and sayings in the Gospels. He is always pointing to something larger than the immediate circumstance. Jesus is the one true God of this universe. If you're worshipping anything or anyone other than him you've got the wrong guy. So rejoice, the Kingdom of God is here and Christ offers himself to you for salvation. Repent and believe.
